I remember when I was getting ready to sell my first dental practice.
Looking back, I wasn’t as clear on my next steps as I could have been or was in subsequent sales. But
what I remember most was how afraid I was to open my mouth and tell my patients that I was selling my
practice (I was afraid to commit).
I was terrified about what life would be like without “being a dentist” This was my first experience of
the power of identity.
What is the non- financial aspect of retirement? It is exactly that! It is all the things that happen
when we supposedly “stop being a dentist.” It includes identity, health, friendships, travel,
adventure, writing a book, volunteering, transitioning, fitness levels, legacy, new purpose, living a
new chapter. Well, now days it is almost anything that can suit your ideal lifestyle.
Don’t say what one executive said 18 months into his retirement: He said, “Don’t ever retire. You are
no longer anybody to anyone” He was having an identity challenge.
Retirement coaching is a process whereby one explores all aspects of designing a dynamic and rewarding
retirement lifestyle, and creating and implementing a plan of action.
